If you want a change from a plain or slatted blind, try this delicate panel – it is ideal for a bathroom. You will need tape measure, MDF fretwork panel, pencil, stanley knife or small hacksaw, fine sandpaper, all-purpose primer and eggshell paint, small paintbrush, and hammer and small tacks.

1. Measure the inside of the window frame, or frames, where the panel will sit – you want a snug fit. If your windows are not symmetrical, take a tracing with newspaper to get a template of the size.

2. On the fretwork panel mark out the size of the window frame with a pencil. Secure the panel on a workbench and cut along the marks with a stanley knife or small hacksaw. Gently sand the edges to get a smooth finish.

3. Prime well and paint both sides of the panel, making sure you coat the insides and edges. Light colours work well or, for a dramatic effect, try a richly coloured glass. Once dry, fit into the window frame with a hammer and small tacks, then touch up any marks in the same colour as the frame.
